Serbia optimistic about joining European family

First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dacic stated in Takovo today that Serbia is optimistic about its future and the inclusion in the European family of peoples, a centuries’ old desire of the Serbian political and intellectual elite.

Dacic, who attended the celebration of the 195th anniversary of the Second Serbian Uprising and the Day of the Gornji Milanovac municipality, laid a wreath at the monument to Duke Milos Obrenovic and stated that it is necessary to achieve historic reconciliation between former enemies and pay respect to all victims killed during the five centuries of conflicts between Serbs and Ottoman Turks.

Conflicts of the past should serve as warnings. Takovo is perhaps the right place from where to make a new appeal for peace and to send out a message of reconciliation, cooperation and a jointly built future, he said.

Takovo should not return us to the past. It should turn our attention towards the future, a future in which the preservation of life will have precedence over killing and we will have a constructive peace instead of war, he said.

The ceremony held in Takovo was also attended by Serbian Parliament Speaker Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic, Minister of Infrastructure Milutin Mrkonjic, Education Minister Zarko Obradovic, Minister of the National Investment Plan Verica Kalanovic and representatives of the diplomatic corps.
