Serbia committed to peace, regional stability

At an event held to observe the remembrance day for the victims of genocide in World War II, First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dacic, on behalf of the Serbian government, laid a wreath today at Staro Sajmište Memorial in Belgrade.

Honouring the memory of the victims of the Sajmiste concentration camp and those who sacrificed their lives in the struggle against fascism, Dacic said that the values and ideals our ancestors fought for are the foundation for Serbia’s European future.

Modern integration processes and the idea of the unity of European countries, born as a logical and just result of the victory over fascism in the Second World War, are the most important peace processes in the history of Europe, said the Minister.

Committed to the principles of our ancestors who played a huge role in the victory over fascism during the Second World War, Serbia is making determined steps towards full European integration, he said.

Serbia is aware that this will contribute to the preservation and further strengthening of its national interests and overall progress, said Dacic.

Serbia is determined to become a member of the European family of nations and to guarantee regional peace and stability. Serbia’s role cannot be ignored regarding any European integration process, he said.

Dacic said that many victims from the Second World War were victims of the ideology of intolerance and hatred, but also a big warning of history. Our task and our duty is to take this warning seriously so that such tragic events would not happen nowadays. We cannot change the past, but we can and must make a big step forward in history by improving political and other circumstances in the Western Balkans, Dacic concluded. Wreaths were also laid by President of Belgrade City Hall Aleksandar Antic, representatives of the Serbian Army, the Association of Warriors of the Second World War (SUBNOR), the Association of Captives of the Genocide Concentration Camps in Croatia 1941-45, and of the Jewish and Roma communities in Serbia. The commemoration was attended by captives of the concentration and death camps, families of those who died and diplomatic representatives of Israel and Germany in Serbia.
