Serbian government pays great attention to closer regional cooperation

Belgrade/Becici, 21 April 2010

First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dacic addressed the conference of the Migration, Asylum, and Refugees Regional Initiative (MARRI), held in Becici, Montenegro, by saying that the Serbian government pays great attention to the establishment of closer regional cooperation.

The Serbian government considers that in this way we can more efficiently achieve our national priorities and meet the requirements and standards in the region within the EU integration process, he said.

The Serbian Interior Ministry hence sees MARRI as the place where common interests of all countries of our region meet, he said.

In the future the Serbian Interior Ministry will actively participate in the work of regional initiatives on issues of visas, asylum and migration, said Dacic.

Montenegrin Minister of the Interior Ivan Brajovic said that the MARRI contributed to the improvement of regional cooperation while his Albanian colleague Lulzim Basha pointed out that Albania is very involved in the implementation of MARRI goals.

On this occasion, Dacic talked with his Montenegrin counterpart Ivan Brajovic about cooperation between the police of the two countries in the Saric case and about postponing the decision, required by EU standards, concerning minors crossing the borders of the two countries.

Dacic and Brajovic reached an agreement that minors will be allowed to cross the borders of Serbia and Montenegro without passports until 1 October 2010.

The Forum of MARRI member states deals with regional cooperation in the field of migration, asylum, border management, visa regime, consular cooperation, the return of refugees, the EU integration process and management of population flow in south-eastern Europe. Attending the conference are representatives of Serbia, Montenegro, Albania, Macedonia, Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina.
