Local self-governments, USAID sign Memorandum of understanding

Representatives of 42 local self-governments and the Economic Security Programme of the US Agency for International Development (USAID) signed a Memorandum of understanding today at a “Ready for challenges of the future” ceremony at the Palace of Serbia government building. The signing took place under the auspices of the Ministry of Youth and Sport.

Minister of Youth and Sport Snezana Samardzic-Markovic said after the signing of the agreement that the first problem for Serbian youth is unemployment and that it is this Ministry’s task to solve it.
The second biggest problem is lack of information, with the third being ways of spending leisure time in a quality manner. One of the ways in which these problems could be solved is by setting up a youth office.
On behalf of the Serbian government, the Minister thanked the USAID representatives who are helping with the youth employment programme in Serbia.
Serbia, within the EU, being led by young and motivated people is indeed a dream worth fighting for and we have sincere partners in our efforts to make this dream come true, stressed Samardzic-Markovic.
The signing of the memorandum was also attended by US Ambassador to Serbia Mary Warlick. She said that youth offices can provide support to the Serbian national strategy for youth employment.
The US government believes that these offices provide young people with an opportunity to enter a free labour market with their capabilities and potential, she said.
Participation in the activities of youth offices is not just ordinary training for young people, rather a process of discovering their own wishes and abilities, said Warlick.
The memorandum will make it possible to strengthen local youth offices and will provide support to local entrepreneurship development programmes.
The results of a USAID survey show that 91% of the 620 young people who successfully completed entrepreneurship training are highly optimistic about their employment prospects, 16% have already applied for start-up projects and 7% have established private businesses.
All activities related to the USAID programme for strengthening economic security are in line with Serbia’s National Youth Strategy, and are implemented in cooperation with relevant ministries, making it possible for young people to gain specialised knowledge and skills required by the modern business environment.
