Solution to refugee issue to be reached only with international community’s help

Deputy Prime Minister Jovan Krkobabic talked with US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State David Robinson and his associates about the refugee issue in Serbia.
The Deputy Prime Minister’s cabinet states that they agreed at the meeting that Serbia is the country with the largest number of refugees and IDPs in Europe and one of the five countries in the world with a long-term refugee status of over 17 years.
They confirmed that the problem can be solved only with the assistance of the international community, agreeing that the time and manner of resolving these problems must be determined. US representatives noted that their country will provide assistance in the process.
The US will also endorse the efforts of the EU, OSCE, European Council and UNHCR to find the most suitable solution for this unresolved problem.
They also noted that the upcoming Regional Conference on Refugee Issues in Light of EU Integration will be a good opportunity to contemplate and solve these problems. The conference has been scheduled for the end of March in Belgrade with the participation of representatives from Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Montenegro.
Krkobabic said he believes that the US will use its authority to speed up the resolution of issues related with refugees and IDPs, adding that he hopes Serbia and the US will continue to improve their relations.
New US Ambassador to Serbia Mary Warlick and Commissioner of the Refugee Commissariat Vladimir Cucic also attended the meeting.
David Robinson is a member of the Senior Foreign Service and is in charge of Europe, central Asia and the US, as well as refugee and migration issues in the world.
