Danube Centre for Competence founded

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Science and Technological Development Bozidar Djelic attended the inauguration ceremony of the Danube Centre for Competence, jointly founded by Serbia, Croatia, Bulgaria, Romania, the Ukraine and Moldova.

Djelic stressed that the aim of this centre will be to boost the tourist offer of the region of the middle and lower Danube and represent interests of tourist organisations.
He said that the Danube has the potential to become one of Europe’s top tourist destinations and that IPA funds will provide for actual projects on this river.
Steps were taken to clean out the river, Djelic said noting that many more things need to be done.
State Secretary for Tourism and the Ministry of Economy and Regional Development Goran Petkovic said that the opening of the Danube Centre for Competence is a huge opportunity for all six countries to share their knowledge and experience.
Petkovic said that this will encourage tourism on the Danube and development of tourist routes, recalling that a bicycle route has already been established, as well as a Road of Roman Emperors and a wine route, which have yielded considerable success.
By developing the river’s tourist potential, we will create conditions for new jobs, bring in additional income from tourism and develop cross-border cooperation, Petkovic noted.
German Ambassador to Serbia Wolfram Maas stressed that setting up the Danube Centre for Competence is important for Serbia and the neighbouring countries, adding that it will bring about the possibility of creating new jobs and garnering larger income.
Maas said that this will be beneficial to the development of the region and good neighbourly relations, adding that Germany endorses the project. He also recalled that it set aside €2 million for its first stage.
