Markovic told a press conference at the government building that citizens will have to be issued with new certificates only in case the data in the registry have been changed.
This means that state organs will no longer be allowed to demand that citizens submit certificates issued within the past six months, which was the case until now.
The administrative fees for issuing certificates will not be changed under the new law, Markovic noted.
He explained that the printing of a new certificate is only RSD 29 more expensive than before, therefore the fee should not be raised, though this may depend on the local self-government.
The new certificates will have eight elements of protection and their safety was one of the conditions for visa liberalisation, he said.
The issuance of certificates with an unlimited validity period is the first stage of the implementation of the Law on registry books. The next stage is to set up the citizens’ registry, that is, an electronic data base of all citizens, Markovic stressed adding that this will enable citizens to be issued with a certificate anywhere in Serbia, regardless of their place of birth.
