Regional cooperation in the fight against organised crime important

For this occasion, Dacic pointed to the importance of cooperation in the region and said that this is the fourth meeting of interior ministers of the ex Yugoslav republics, that this is a good tradition and perhaps the only field in which ministers of the region meet every year.

The Minister said that the participants of the conference agreed that mutual cooperation is very important if the countries from the region wish to successfully fight organised crime, especially when it comes to the Balkan route of drug smuggling, which also includes Serbian people who trade in cocaine from Latin America towards Europe and Africa.

He voiced the hope that, just as in the case of Croatia, good cooperation with all countries will eliminate the possibility of using certain legal obstacles to evade responsibility for criminal acts.

Participants proposed that police and prosecutor’s offices of various countries conduct joint investigations so that they could issue single arrest warrants or follow criminal groups jointly.

Dacic presented a proposal to the Croatian Interior Minister for the formation of a joint regional centre for the fight against organised crime as well as joint investigation teams.

Once more readiness was shown for cooperation. The joint conclusion of the interior and justice ministers from the region was that ways must be found to remove all legal loopholes that allow criminals to evade justice, said Dacic.

The conference in Zagreb was opened by Croatian Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor. In her opening speech she said that police in the region must cooperate closely to combat organised crime.

We can be successful in this fight only if we cooperate and communicate with each other, said Kosor.

Croatian Interior Minister Tomislav Karamarko, who presided over the conference, said in his address that peace and stability cannot be achieved by working separately.

Coordinated and joint work can produce far better results than isolated efforts. This will serve our people’s interests better as we move towards a European future, said Karamarko.
