Dacic meets with Holder, Hastings

First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dacic met in Washington with US Attorney General Eric Holder and Vice Chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence Alcee Hastings.

Dacic said after the talks that the political systems of Serbia and the United States are significantly different, so the US Department of the Interior has completely different jurisdictions, while the partners for cooperation in the United States are primarily the Department of Justice and part of the Department of Homeland Security.

The Department of Justice includes the FBI and other agencies and security structures, that have so far helped in police cooperation as well as in the implementation of various programmes and laws such as the ICITAP programme, said Dacic.

According to Dacic, the US Attorney General expressed his satisfaction with the existing cooperation.

I invited him to visit the Serbian Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Justice, which he accepted, said Dacic.

The Interior Minister expressed the expectation that cooperation will continue in strengthening our capacity to fight both organised crime and terrorism and the exchange of that experience is very important, bearing in mind that the United States has a longer tradition when it comes to organising the most important police structures to combat crime.

I spoke with Vice Chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence Alcee Hastings, who was also pleased with the results achieved in our cooperation. We talked about how to find solutions to common problems that all countries in the world are facing, that is, how to fight against organised crime, illegal drug trafficking and international terrorism, said Dacic.

He added this is particularly important since Hastings is Co-Chairman of the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe.

Regardless of the difference in size of Serbia and the United States in terms of international importance, there are great opportunities for cooperation in securing peace, security and protecting our citizens from organised crime, crime and terrorism, said Dacic.
