US one of Serbia’s key strategic partners

First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dacic is on a working visit to the USA during which he will meet with top US officials to discuss security and police cooperation issues.

The Ministry says in a statement that announcing meetings in Washington and New York, Dacic stressed that the USA is one of Serbia’s key strategic partners and in that sense the dialogue and constant cooperation between the two countries are extremely important.

He announced that he will meet with Deputy Secretary of State James Steinberg, FBI Director Robert Miller, New York Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly, Assistant to the State Secretary for the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement David Jones, representatives from the Department of Justice and other state officials.

Dacic said he will visit the New York Police, the Department of National Security and the new Centre for Combating Terrorism, adding that at the meeting with State Department representatives he will discuss cooperation regarding political relations, because regional stability is very important both for the USA and Serbia.

He announced that he will assure his collocutors that Serbia is one of the key factors of peace and stability in the region and very keen on developing and maintaining good relations with key international players.

Dacic said that he will hold a lecture at the Columbia University in New York and the Washington National Defence University, as well as attend several meetings with congressmen.

We will have a series of important meetings that will help us make a step forward in our relations with the US, but most of all help us make cosniderable progress when it comes to the cooperation of our Ministry of the Interior with the FBI and other US security structures.

Following a visit to the Capitol Hill, Dacic said that apart from global political issues and topics of regional character concerning police relations, at the upcoming meetings he will also discuss regional police cooperation, cooperation in the fight against organised crime, terrorism, corruption and illegal trafficking in drugs, human beings and weapons.

He recalled that the Ministry of the Interior has had satisfactory cooperation with the USA, adding that the US embassy in Belgrade donated equipment to the Serbian Special Anti-Terrorist Unit (SAJ) on several occasions.

We also anticipate talks about how to continue the exchange of experiences and the training of our staff in the US, Dacic said recalling that some of the top SAJ commanders were trained in the US and attended seminars at the FBI and other similar institutions.
