Djelic opens Petnica Research Centre exhibition

Deputy Prime Minister for EU integration and Minister of Science and Technology Bozidar Djelic today opened an exhibition organised by the Petnica Research Centre, titled “A Step in Science”.

Djelic said at the occasion that the exhibition presents 70 projects by the members of the Centre, stressing that this is the biggest exhibition of its kind in Europe and it confirms that scientific research in Serbia is up to international standards.
He said that many scientists who are currently working in European countries attended the Petnica Research Centre, adding that mobility means a lot to youth and talented people.
Djelic said that the Ministry of Science and Technological Development set aside RSD 13 million last year for the Centre and that the same amount, possibly even more, will be allocated to the Centre this year.
He said that his Ministry will not allow work at the Centre to be jeopardised during 2010, adding that a €200 million financial agreement with the European Investment Bank (EIB) was confirmed this week.
Of that sum, €6 million will be set aside for Petnica and maintenance of its infrastructure in the next 18 to 24 months.
Also, parts of the funds from the EIB will be used for opening a centre for popularisation of science in Serbia in 2012, where Petnica will have its representative office.
Djelic said that knowledge economy and young scientists are of strategic importance for Serbia.
President of Petnica’s council Marko Andjelkovic said that 70 works of 103 young authors – students of Petnica were presented at the exhibition.
Andjelkovic said that the projects were from the fields of social, natural and technical sciences and added that new seminars and courses for 2010 will start in Petnica in ten days.
