Djelic, who is also Minister of Science and Technological Development, told the press following the meeting with Kohout that the Czech Republic endorses the proposal that the issue of Serbia’s candidacy in the EU be included in the Council of Ministers’ agenda as early as this spring.
He recalled that in the past year the Czech Republic backed up visa liberalisation for Serbian citizens and the implementation of the interim trade agreement, noting that it now advocates that EU candidate status be granted to Serbia as soon as possible.
He said Serbia can learn a lot from the Czech Republic, one of the most successful transition countries and recent members of the European family, since in the last 20 years it attracted around $90 billion in foreign direct investment.
The Deputy Prime Minister noted that the Czech Republic is the only EU member that secured an individual donation of $1 billion for nuclear decommissioning at the Vinca Institute of Nuclear Sciences.
Important areas of cooperation between the two countries are the energy sector and railways, said Djelic and added that the negotiations are underway on the investments whose value is up to €300 million for the rehabilitation of Corridor 10 - from Nis to Dimitrovgrad.
In terms of future bilateral cooperation between the two countries, the Serbian Deputy Prime Minister announced that it will be the main area of European integration, economy, economy of knowledge and science.
Kohout expressed hope that the EU Council of Ministers will soon consider the Serbia’s candidacy and confirmed Czech support to Serbia on its European path.
The Czech Deputy Prime Minister stressed that his country will help Serbia meet specific conditions on the road to European integration.
Serbia is on the right path towards the European integration and can always count on the support of the Czech Republic, Kohout said, adding that an agreement was reached with Djelic about the signing of a technical memorandum on cooperation in the field of European integration.
