Interior ministry’s priority in 2010 fight against crime, corruption

First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dacic today announced that the fight against corruption and drug dealers will be his Ministry’s priorities in 2010.

At the annual meeting with top officials of the Ministry of the Interior and chiefs of all police administrations Dacic recalled that last year satisfactory results were achieved in the fight against crime.

He also added that this fight must continue and focus on hi-tech and business crime, abuses in the privatisation process and child pornography.

As the Ministry’s key results in 2009 Dacic noted its contribution in the visa liberalisation process and increase of citizens’ trust in the police.

Dacic stressed that on the way to acquiring EU candidacy, Serbia will be given a roadmap, that is, a list of conditions it must meet.

Dacic said that priorities in this year are the continuation of reforms in the Ministry, the procurement of equipment for the police and increase of police workers’ salaries.

He said that stability in Serbia has been maintained, but that there is a latent threat of terrorist activities from the region and some other countries of the world.

Speaking about the results of the Ministry’s work in the previous year, he said that 1.3 tonnes of various drugs were confiscated in the territory of Serbia, and over 28,000 narcotic pills.

Owing to the information provided by the Serbian police, 1.2 tonnes of cocaine were confiscated in the past year and a half.

Dacic said that the police and security services are a very important factor of regional and world stability and safety. The First Deputy Prime Minister said that in 2009 the percentage of solved cases of the most serious crimes and those related to corruption also increased.

He added that last year 1,850 pieces of various arms were seized, as well as a large amount of ammunition and 120 hand grenades.

Dacic recalled that a police unit for financial investigations was also formed, tasked with determining the origin of property obtained through criminal activities and the confiscation of such property.

Last year there were 1,770 various attacks at police officers, with two officers killed on duty and 383 injured.

He stressed that the Ministry of the Interior is ready to send more police officers to Haiti to help the people there after the devastating earthquake that hit the country on January 12.

Dacic said that the five police officers taking part in the UN peace mission in Haiti managed to rescue two families in the last several days.

He recalled that there are Serbian peacekeepers in Liberia as well, voicing his hope that the Serbian Ministry of the Interior will take part in non-military EU missions as well.
