First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dacic said today that the Sector for emergency situations is getting prepared for new floods that might take place tomorrow or the day after.

Upon visiting an embankment in the village Provo near Sabac, where a danger of flooding from river Sava existed, Dacic said that the Novi Sad division of the Gendarmerie is also on alert, and if needed, the police will be included as well.
He said that the successful response of teams from the Sector for emergency situations along 15 kilometres of the embankment in Provo confirms the importance of the adoption of the Law on emergency situations.
The goal for the next period is to identify places where emergency situations might take place, Dacic said, adding that that does not refers only to floods, but to other natural disasters as well.
Head of the Sector for emergency situations Predrag Maric said that the situation on the Sava is stable, but that all departments of the Sector are on alert due to a possible new wave of flooding.
Assistant Director of the Hydrometeorological Institute of Serbia Slavomir Stamenkovic said that that there is no danger of Belgrade being flooded by the Sava and Danube rivers because the Djerdap hydroelectric power plant is working at full capacity and is releasing sufficient amounts of water.
He added that there is no danger of flooding from the Drina and Tisa rivers either, although the water level of the latter is high.
The Sava river reached over 5.5 metres near Provo and in some parts it is only 20 centimetres missing below the banks, which is why members of the Sector for emergency situations and villagers reinforced the embankment with sand bags.
