Speaking at a press conference at which the results achieved by the Ministry’s inspection services during the past year and its plans for 2010 were presented, Pajkic said that rules of procedure will be adopted before the end of January, when registration will begin.
He said that all food producers and traders will have to be registered, regardless of whether they are registered in the Business Registers Agency.
He said that all those who fail to register by June 11, 2011 will not be able to go on producing, distributing or selling food, adding that no registration is required for individuals who grow food for private consumption.
Pajkic said that a food safety council will be formed during the first three months of this year, explaining that the council will act as an expert advisory body which will help raise food safety standards.
He said that the council will consist of experts who will make recommendations related to the preparation and harmonisation of regulations with EU standards, adding that the council will also propose various measures.
Pajkic said that after January 20, the Inspectorate General will present the results of the inspections of bread and bakery products, which were carried out throughout Serbia by agricultural and phytosanitary inspection services at the end of last year and the beginning of this year.
Talking about the work of the Inspectorate General in 2009, Pajkic said that agricultural, phytosanitary, water, forestry and hunting inspection services carried out 167,425 inspections.
Pajkic said that 6,409 misdemeanours, 613 economic offences and 209 criminal offences were reported.
He stressed that 250 tonnes of various agricultural products, 250,000 litres of wine, spirits, and beer, other alcoholic as well as non-alcoholic drinks and mineral water was confiscated.
Pajkic said that 52 tonnes of fertilizers and 3,500 litres of pesticides of unsatisfactory quality were removed from the market.
Pajkic said that last year 310 inspectors worked under the Inspectorate General while this year the number of employees will be reduced by 20 or 30 because of personnel rationalization.
He stressed that the number of inspectors has been dropping since 2007 but the number of inspections has increased, while the number of irregularities reported is also falling, adding that this is proof of increasing food safety on the market.
