In an interview with the daily Politika, Sutanovac said that in 2009 Serbia’s arms exports reached almost the same level as in 1989 in the former Yugoslavia, which was three times bigger than Serbia, adding that this is a success but not the final target.
He stressed that the expansion of cooperation with NATO will bring not only security advantages to Serbia but also scientific and technological progress, as well as medical, energy and environmental development.
Sutanovac said that he believes that a visit by a Serbian Defence Ministry delegation to the US last year and US Vice President Joe Biden’s visit to Serbia had many positive results, of which US donations to the Serbian defence system stand out.
He said that Serbia’s top foreign policy priority is to join the EU and it needs all the support it can get in this process, adding that following Biden’s visit to Serbia, the US administration clearly stated that Serbia is meeting its obligations towards the Hague tribunal, which greatly helped Serbia’s EU integration process.
He said that a US Senate delegation led by Senator George Voinovich is expected to visit soon, after which conditions will be created for more formal US support for Serbia.
He said that currently the most important part of the defence system reforms is the professionalisation of the Serbian Army.
