Fight against corruption to be intensified in 2010

First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dacic said today that the fight against organised crime and corruption will be intensified this year, with a particular focus on drug trafficking.

In a statement to Beta news agency, Dacic stressed that the aim of the police is to uncover organisers behind criminal groups, stressing that gathering evidence and building a case against the real organisers behind crime is a difficult job.
He said that he expects that the public’s confidence in state institutions, primarily in the police force and the success of the fight against crime and corruption will continue to increase this year, as it did last year.
He said that the Interior Ministry will work on the continuing European integration process and new obligations and a new road map if its application for EU candidacy is accepted this year.
He said that Serbia needs to make intensive efforts to establish a truly European value system in order to become a member of the EU.
He said that he is satisfied with the work of the police, adding that police reforms will be continued.
Dacic said that drivers and pedestrians need time to become familiar with new road safety regulations but respecting these regulations will make matters much easier.
He said that members of the police force must also strictly follow the law and will be punished if they violate traffic regulations.
He said that the purpose of the new law is to reduce the number of accidents and casualties, adding that from 800 to 900 people annually die in Serbia as a result of traffic accidents.
