Serbia should play key role in regional peace, stability

First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dacic said today that his Ministry’s and the government’s aim is to ensure security for the people and to make Serbia a force for peace and stability in the region.

In a New Year’s interview with the Tanjug news agency, Dacic said that it is necessary for Serbia to have a wise policy for establishing good international relations.

He stressed that the security situation in Serbia is stable, pointing to the fact that the expansion of certain terrorist activities from other countries to Serbia is a potential threat, particularly in the part of the country under UN administration.

He said that the Serbian security and defence forces are ready to respond to any challenge and to defend the country against any form of threat.

Political stability is of utmost importance for Serbia and it will not be possible to achieve national goals such as the protection of national interests, European integration and social justice without it.

Dacic said that it is necessary to accelerate work on European integration.

It is Serbia that stands to gain from European integration and not the EU, he said, adding that the Serbian people will be able to use EU funds at a time when the government and the people are facing a difficult transition, said the Deputy Prime Minister.

Speaking about his Ministry’s priority, Dacic said that the fight against organised crime, corruption and drug trafficking will be continued, regardless of whether the criminals are from Serbia or any other country in the Balkans.

He said that he has high hopes for the new Law on road safety as well as the continuation of administrative activities such as the issuance of new passports.

Speaking about the results achieved by the Interior Ministry in 2009, Dacic said that he is satisfied, but there is always scope for improvement.

He recalled that the police managed to break up several dozen criminal groups and that the total number of criminal offences has dropped and that the percentage of cases solved has increased.

Good results have been recorded in fighting the trade in narcotics, including confiscating 1.25 tons of drugs and over 21,000 narcotic pills in the country and abroad, at locations from Bolivia to South Africa.

The Minister voiced hope that the adoption of the amendments to the Law on prevention of violence at sporting events will create conditions for the eradication of violence and the separation of hooligans and criminals from fans.

Speaking about cooperation with the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY), Dacic reiterated that Serbia is determined to bring that task to an end successfully.
