Serbia's successes at international level highpoint of year

Serbian Deputy Prime Minister Jovan Krkobabic said today that 2009 has been marked by important Serbian successes at international level, but also by a series of negative events resulting from the world economic crisis, and by violence.
Krkobabic said that visa liberalisation and the unfreezing of the interim trade agreement opened the door to Europe for Serbia, adding that Serbia's achievements at the UN are also considerable.
By putting the issue of the status of Kosovo-Metohija before the International Court of Justice, the resolution of this problem has been removed from the sphere of politics to the sphere of law. He said that the global economic crisis is one of the negative events of 2009, stressing that the government took timely steps to mitigate the effects of the crisis.
He said that despite the government’s efforts, a large majority of people are in a very vulnerable position and that the government will continue to implement measures to help socially disadvantaged groups next year. Krkobabic said that some of the saddest memories from 2009 would include the murder of French citizen Brice Taton and the escalation of violence at sporting events.
