Satisfactory relations among nationalities in Vojvodina

First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dacic today said, following a meeting with speaker of the Vojvodina parliament Sandor Egeresi, that relations among different nationalities in the province are satisfactory.

At a press conference following the meeting, Dacic said that the number of ethnically based conflicts was much smaller this year than in 2008, voicing his pleasure at the good relations between the various nationalities and religious communities in Vojvodina, as well as in Serbia as a whole.
He said the police recorded fewer physical assaults and offensive graffiti than before, noting that such cases were now solved more efficiently by the police, provincial administration and local self-governments.
Dacic noted that members of national minorities can apply for jobs at the Ministry of the Interior, provided they undergo the required training and education in Sremska Kamenica Elementary Training Centre or the Police Academy.
The Ministry’s major tasks are the preservation of peace and order, good relations between nationalities and the constant fight against crime, corruption and terrorism, he reiterated.
Egeresi said that good cooperation between the police and provincial authorities contributed to the reduction in the number of conflicts, but also stressed the importance of programmes on tolerance implemented by the provincial government.
He said he and Dacic discussed courses in national minorities’ languages for police officers in mixed communities, the number of police officers from national minority communities and other issues related to peace and stability in Vojvodina.
Following the meeting Dacic visited the police station in Backa Topola and later also met with businessmen from Backa Topola, Senta and Becej.
