Application for EU membership result of hard work

First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dacic said today that Serbian citizens deserve to enter the EU and underlined that the application for EU candidacy is not a gift from Europe, but a result of hard work and the fulfilment of necessary requirements.
Dacic said that visa liberalisation and the unfreezing of the Interim trade agreement is also something that Serbia deserved. He added that Serbia is part of Europe and that it has high standards in many fields, even higher than in some EU member states.
The Minister reiterated that Serbia's strategic goal is EU membership, not because of Europe, but in order to provide higher living standards to Serbian citizens.
Dacic attended today in Leskovac the putting into operation of a factory for the purification of drinking water in the village of Gorina and the Barje water processing plant.
The water processing plant, in which over €80 million was invested, can process 840 litres per second.
Dacic said that this is a capital investment, stressing that the water from the accumulation lake can also be used to irrigate the fertile plains around Leskovac, as well as for electricity production.
In the first stage Barje will supply water to 90,000 Leskovac residents and later to another 110,000 people, including the residents of Lebane, Bojnik and Vlasotince.
The dam will also protect Leskovac, because the River Veternica floods the area twice a year.
Dacic noted that the project is crucial for the whole of southern Serbia and reiterated that he advocates evenly-balanced regional development, because without it there can be no political stability or conditions for EU membership.
