Serbia contemplates possibilities for EU candidacy application

Deputy Prime Minister for EU integration Bozidar Djelic today stated that Serbia is contemplating the possibilities for applying for EU candidacy, announcing that it will soon be decided when it will formally address Brussels with the candidacy application.

At the regional conference “Western Balkans towards the Schengen White List”, held at the Serbian Government Palace, Djelic stressed that Serbia is ready to cover the road from applying for to acquiring candidate status in a very short time.
He added that this has become possible because the European Commission decided to recognise all of Serbia’s efforts since the beginning of 2009 as implementation of the transitional trade agreement.
He said Serbia will soon fulfil all the conditions needed for acquiring candidate status.
Djelic pointed out that this is a big day for Serbian citizens, as well as the Western Balkans, voicing his hope that within six months all countries in the region will be on the Schengen White List.
He underscored that Serbia endorses speedy visa liberalisation for Albania and Bosnia-Herzegovina.
The Deputy Prime Minister recalled that the Serbian government has organised the campaign “Europe for Everyone” to enable 50 citizens, who have never before been to the EU, to spend seven days there.
Djelic stressed that the decision to abolish visas is a crucial achievement, not only of this government but also previous ones, as well as an indicator of the state’s continuity. It also proves that great results are achievable through a broad consensus in the political system.
European Parliament member and Visa Liberalisation Rapporteur Tanya Fayon congratulated Serbian citizens on the beginning of the visa-free regime.
Fayon stressed her support to the Serbian authorities in applying for EU candidacy over the next several days, noting that more than 20 EU states have backed Serbia on this matter.
She said that the authorities in Belgrade will know when the time is right to submit application for candidacy.
