Serbian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Regional Development Mladjan Dinkic said today that Sremska Mitrovica will be the gateway to the future organised tourist tour "The road of Roman emperors", which the Serbian Tourist Organisation is promoting as a principal attraction for tourists who visit Serbia.
Speaking at the opening of the Sirmium Visitor's Centre in Sremska Mitrovica, in which a highly important historical monument, the Roman "Emperor's Palace" from the end of the 3rd century and the beginning of the 4th century will be protected, Dinkic said that the Serbian government has invested over RSD 140 million in its completion in the past two years.
Dinkic thanked the Institute for Protection of Cultural Monuments for its work and efforts so far and said that the idea of this project is to enable visitors from all over the world to be able to see the places where Roman emperors lived.
He voiced hope that domestic tourists will also visit the locality.
He pointed out that Sirmium, together with Viminacium and Felix Romuliana, is a cultural treasury of Serbia and supported the initiative to put this location under UNESCO's protection.
The Sirmium Visitor's Centre is a common project of the Ministry of Economy and Regional Development and the Ministry of Culture, realised in cooperation with the town of Sremska Mitrovica and the Tourist Organisation of Serbia.
