Krkobabic presents financial assistance to refugees

Deputy Prime Minister Jovan Krkobabic and Refugee Commissioner Vladimir Cucic today presented representatives from various municipalities and towns in Serbia with notifications about the allocation of RSD 100 million for refugees and IDPs.

The funds were granted to representatives of 55 municipalities and will be used to purchase 350 packages of construction materials in order to complete the construction of unfinished housing units.
Krkobabic recalled that Serbia is fifth in the world in terms of refugee numbers and first in Europe in terms of the length of the refugee status.
Since 1991 around one million refugees have come to Serbia and 200,000 were granted Serbian citizenship, Krkobabic said.
He announced that this type of assistance to local communities will be continued in 2010.
At the same time we are conducting talks with Bosnia-Herzegovina to solve the refugee issue, he explained.
We both have to solve an important issue, namely Chapter 23, which deals with human rights and freedoms and property rights, because we cannot become EU members unless we meet these terms, the Deputy Prime Minister said.
Cucic said that the Serbian government’s policy towards refugees and IDPs is to find a right and just solution. He also thanked the European Commission and the UNHCR for their financial assistance to this programme.
Cucic announced that in 2010 two facilities, each containing 30 housing units, will be built in Belgrade to accommodate refugees from the remaining refugee centres.
UNHCR representative Angelita Cecere said that cooperation between local and central authorities is the best way to solve the refugee and IDP issues, recalling that in 2009 the UNHCR set aside over $700,000, for 138 families.
