EU grants €140m of non-refundable aid to Western Balkans

Serbian Prime Minister of European Integration Bozidar Djelic said today at the conference "Europe-Western Balkans", that is being held in Brussels, that €140 million in non-refundable aid has been set aside for the countries of the Western Balkans.

Djelic said that these funds will be provided from the budget of the EU, the European bank for Reconstruction and Development, the European Investment Bank and the Development Bank of the Council of the EU.
He said that after the visa liberalisation and the unfreezing of the interim trade agreement, today's meeting in Brussels has been dedicated to finance and economics and the €140 million will go to thee main areas, infrastructure, including social housing, energy and support to small and medium-sized enterprises.
According to Djelic, the first €26 million in non-refundable aid has already been set aside, of which Serbia received €8.5 million for eight projects including repair of the water supply systems in Nis and Kragujevac, modernisation of Serbian prisons, support for science and technology, construction of Corridor 10 and preparation of the Gazela bridge project.
He made three concrete proposals on behalf of the region, that EU pre-accession aid be used as support to structural reforms in the domains of education, health, pension system and social policy, to create a fund for financing technology to the amount of €100 million, and to examine the possibility of creating an international company for construction of the railroad part of Corridor 10, since the requirements of that project exceed the current financial possibilities of individual countries in the region.
