Serbia meets EU candidacy terms

Belgrade, 9 December 2009

Deputy Prime Minister for EU integration Bozidar Djelic today said that Serbia has met all the conditions for submitting an application for EU candidacy, adding that the state leadership will soon decide about the best moment to make that move.

In an interview for today’s edition of the Danas daily, Djelic said that the condition for applying for candidacy was full implementation of the transitional trade agreement.

Therefore we can now say that this final term has been met, Djelic noted.

He said that in the upcoming days Serbia will hold consultations with Sweden, the presiding EU country, as well as the European Commission and other EU members.

Speaking about the upcoming visit of Dutch Minister of Foreign Affairs Maxime Verhagen to Serbia, Djelic said that they will discuss all issues of mutual interest.

We have a high opinion of the Netherlands’ stance and the fact that it provided the necessary consensus within the EU and strongly endorsed visa abolishment, Djelic stressed.
