Time for applying for EU membership to be determined soon

Serbian Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration Bozidar Djelic said today that the Serbian government will soon decide upon the best moment to submit Serbia's application for EU membership.

Djelic, who is in Brussels, where he will attend the "Europe-Western Balkans" conference tomorrow, said that starting the application of the Interim trade agreement with the EU is another positive act by Brussels towards Serbia, following the abolishment of visas. We highly appreciate the consensus reached and the position of the Netherlands, which supported such a sequence of events. We will have the opportunity to discuss this, as well as many other bilateral issues, with Dutch Foreign Minister Maxime Verhagen, during his visit to Belgrade next week, Djelic said.

He explained that the implementation of the interim trade agreement will for the first time make Serbia and EU parties to an agreement which will bring security for domestic and foreign investors, who will now know the precise nature of the economic relations between Serbia and the EU.

He said that because of the diagonal cumulation in the trade regime producers will have new benefits while exporting to EU countries and the CEFTA zone.

Djelic said that the first meeting of the joint committee for the implementation of the trade agreement between Serbia and the EU will be held in Brussels on March 2, next year.
