Public confidence in police grew last year

According to the survey conducted by Strategic Marketing, public confidence in the police increased by 5% during last year and 76% of the people surveyed rated the Interior Ministry’s work as excellent, very good or good.

According to the survey, 23% of the people surveyed are of the opinion that the public security situation has improved owing to the Ministry’s efforts. This opinion is now held by 8% more people than in 2008.

According to the survey, 77% of those surveyed believe that politicians influence police work while 64% think that there is corruption in the police force.

People said that the biggest problems concerning public security are related to drugs (48%), crime (46%), corruption (26%) and violence (15%).

After the presentation Dacic said that surveying public opinion is important for the Interior Ministry because it helps determine ways of increasing public confidence, which is very important for police work.

Commenting on the fact that the survey shows that more than two thirds of the public are of the opinion that politicians influence police work, Dacic said that the police force does not belong to any particular political party and works in the interest of the people.

Speaking about police corruption, he said that corruption is present in all state organs and the police force is not an exception but the Ministry is fighting against this problem.

He said that the aim is to make the police force professional, modern and educated.

Dacic said that the new traffic safety law which will come into force on December 10 will ensure greater public safety and called on everyone to respect traffic safety regulations.

Kypreos said that this year’s survey confirms that the police is one of the most highly trusted departments, adding that the OSCE Mission in Serbia will continue to cooperate closely with the Interior Ministry in order to create an even more modern, efficient and democratic police force.
