Speaking at a press conference concerning World AIDS Day, Milosavljevic said that it has also been noticed that the transmission patterns have changed and now the number of young male patients is three times more than women.
The Minister said the fight against AIDS was successful in raising public awareness about the problem.
He said that the fight against AIDS is the best example of multi-sector cooperation and partnership, which includes government ministries, UN agencies, international organisations, NGOs and religious organisations.
Milosavljevic said that one of the reasons why the Serbian people changed their attitudes towards the AIDS problem is that various campaigns focused on raising awareness are being carried out constantly with great energy throughout the country.
He said that during the last two years the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria approved two five year projects, costing nearly €20 million, to Serbia.
He said that the first project is being implemented by the Health Ministry and the other one is being carried out by the Ministry in cooperation with the AIDS NGO Omladina JAZAS.
Director of the Milan Jovanovic Batut public health institute Tanja Knezevic said that 97 people were diagnosed with HIV in Serbia this year and 36 of them developed AIDS.
She said that 17 deaths caused by AIDS were registered, while two HIV positive persons died.
She said that the number of HIV positive men as well as those with developed AIDS is three times higher compared to women, adding that 75% of the HIV positive people are in the age group from 25 to 39.
She said that after a continuous trend of AIDS increase since 1999, a gradual decrease in the number of AIDS patients has been observed, and it is estimated that this trend will continue.
Head of the United Nations HIV/AIDS Thematic Group Juditha Rheinberg said that the number of newly infected people in the world last year reduced by 17% and that HIV infection among young people has fallen.
Rheinberg said that changes in transmission patterns have been observed in Serbia, adding that sexual transmission is predominant and the number of newly registered cases among the young population is increasing.
The Health Ministry, with the support of the Education Ministry, UNICEF and UNAIDS organised today lectures in all elementary schools in Belgrade, where 14 to 16 year olds were given information about HIV and protection.
