Serbia expects SAA to be unfrozen

First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dacic said last night that Serbia expects the Stabilisation and Association Agreement (SAA) with the EU to be unfrozen and all its provisions implemented.

Following a meeting with European Parliament rapporteur for Serbia Jelko Kacin, Dacic said that his Ministry is fully focused on fulfilling the conditions for visa liberalisation, which would enable Belgrade to start contemplating Serbia’s application for EU candidacy.
The continuation of EU integration is crucial to Serbia. Serbia expects the integration process to be accelerated and that visa liberalisation will be the first stage on its road towards the EU. Serbia’s strategic goal is EU candidacy and once the political conditions are met, we expect the Transitional Trade Agreement with the EU to be unfrozen in order to create the conditions for Serbia’s further steps towards the EU, Dacic noted.
It is important that Serbia continues with reforms in the legislative and other spheres that will help it become a full EU member as soon as possible.
Kacin said it is irrelevant when Serbia will apply for candidacy, but rather that it receives an affirmative answer from Brussels that will enable the pro-European forces to make the next step towards the EU and encourage other countries in the region.
He reiterated that Serbia must establish full cooperation with the Hague tribunal so that the Transitional Trade Agreement can be unfrozen and ratification of the SAA initiated.
Serbia is striding towards the future and after a few more steps it will have to make some other important decisions, Kacin said, stressing that when it comes to EU integration we must speak about the entire region, and not just Serbia, which is why it is expected that Serbia help Bosnia-Herzegovina and Albania to obtain the visa free regime.
The goal is not just EU entry. There is also the white Schengen, the removal of police controls at border crossings, enabling free traffic of people and goods. A series of projects requires implementation and mutual trust on both sides of every border. Serbia can be the driving engine helping the entire region to move towards the EU, Kacin stressed.
