Respect for children's rights in all areas necessary

First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dacic underlined today the importance of respect for children's rights and said that the police is ready to contribute to that goal in the greatest measure possible.

Speaking at a public debate on the presentation of children in the media and the media's role in reporting on children and their rights, Dacic said that the training of 415 police officers for treating minors is in its final stage.
He said that the Ministry of the Interior formed a special working group for coordination of activities for implementation of provisions of the Convention on the rights of the child and that a memorandum on cooperation between the police and schools has been signed.
Dacic added that a special link was added on the Internet page of the Ministry of the Interior dedicated to children and the young, at which all those interested can find information about children's rights and activities of the police aimed at their protection.
The First Deputy Prime Minister said that in the new Law on traffic safety, which should come into force on December 10, great attention has been paid to protection of children. He added that the Serbian government has initiated a series of laws and legal acts, as well as strategies for realisation of children's rights and that it has formed several advisory bodies.
Dacic said that the Ministry of the Interior will be UNICEF's partner and collaborator in protecting the rights of children and highlighted the importance of prevention in the protection of children's rights, through raising social awareness.
The debate was organised by the UNICEF office in Belgrade on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Convention on the rights of the child.
