Serbian Patriarch Pavle buried in Rakovica monastery

Serbian Patriarch Pavle was buried today in Rakovica monastery, after a funeral service held by Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople Bartholomew and Metropolitan Amfilohije and senior church officials.

The funeral was attended by all the Serbian Orthodox Church bishops, Serbian President Boris Tadic, Serbian Prime Minister Mirko Cvetkovic and Serbian parliament Speaker Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic.
Former Prime Minister of Serbia Vojislav Kostunica and Prime Minister of Republika Srpska Milorad Dodik also attended the funeral.
During the funeral, the monastery courtyard was packed with citizens and in front of the monastery several thousand people awaited the arrival of the coffin carrying Patriarch Pavle's body.
The funeral speech was held by envoy of the Russian Orthodox Church, Metropolitan of Minsk and Sluzk Filaret, on behalf of Russian Patriarch Kirill.
He said that the entire Orthodox world shares in the grief of the Serbian Orthodox Church for the heavy loss of Patriarch Pavle, the brave keeper of the fate and heritage of the Serbian people.
Half a century ago he was appointed bishop in the Serbian sacred land, Kosovo-Metohija, whose sorrows he carried in his heart, said Metropolitan Filaret.
He recalled that Pavle was appointed patriarch on the eve of the most difficult days for the peoples of the former Yugoslavia, that he depicted the best features of Serbian Orthodox monasticism with his ascetic life and that he always did his best to offer comfort in distress.
The funeral of Patriarch Pavle was carried out without the presence of TV crews and there was no TV broadcast.
Former Prime Minister of Serbia Vojislav Kostunica and Prime Minister of Republika Srpska Milorad Dodik also attended the funeral.
