At the plateau in front of St. Sava’s temple the funeral ceremony was held for the late Patriarch. Metropolitan of Montenegro and the Littoral Amfilohije, Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople Bartholomew and Serbian President Boris Tadic also said goodbye to the late Patriarch.
The funeral service, held by Patriarch of Constantinople Bartholomew, Metropolitan Amfilohije, bishops and clergymen, began at 11 am in the presence of tens of thousands Serbian citizens.
Prayers for the soul of the late Serbian Patriarch were also made by heads of other churches, namely Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church Danilo, Archbishop of the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Albania Anastasios and Christopher of Prague, Metropolitan of the Czech Lands and Slovakia.
Russian Metropolitan of Minsk and Sluzk Filaret, Metropolitan of Jerusalem Isaiah, Metropolitan of Alexandria Petar and Metropolitan of Georgia Gerasim also took part in the prayers, as well as Metropolitans of the Athens and Cyprus Archbishoprics Vasilius and George of Paphos.
The official delegation from Mount Athos comprised abbot of the Pantokrator monastery Archimandrite Gavrilo, abbot of the Philotheou monastery Archimandrite Nicodim and hieromonch Serafim.
The American Orthodox Church was represented by Archbishop of Quebec Irinej and Archimandrite Zakhej and the Conference of European Churches by Secretary General Venerable Colin Williams.
Also present at the funeral ceremony were President Boris Tadic, Serbian Prime Minister Mirko Cvetkovic, Serbian ministers and 100 MPs, as well as delegations from neighbouring countries.
Members of the Karadjordjevic royal family, Belgrade Mayor Dragan Djilas, Serbian parliament Speaker Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic and representatives from all parliament caucuses also attended the ceremony.
At 7:30 am a liturgy of the dead was served at the Cathedral Church by Patriarch of Constantinople Bartholomew with the assistance of Metropolitan Amfilohije and in the presence of all archbishops of the Serbian Orthodox Church and bishops from abroad in the presence of a huge number of believers, statesmen and church and state delegations from Serbia and abroad.
Serbian Patriarch Pavle will be buried at 1 pm at the Rakovica monastery’s cemetery next to the grave of the first patriarch of the renovated Serbian patriarchy Dimitrije.
