Djelic invites Japanese businesses to invest in Serbia

Belgrade, 18 November 2009

Serbian Deputy Prime Minister for EU integration Bozidar Djelic called on Japanese business-people this evening to increase their investments in Serbia, stressing that Serbia is politically and economically stable and has a strategic geographic position in the region.

Speaking at a seminar for Japanese business-people “Serbia’s Business Environment”, Djelic said that he hopes that there will be an increase in Japanese investments over the coming years, adding that they are not a high level at the moment.

Serbia has free access to the EU market and free trade agreements with Russia, Belarus, Turkey and CEFTA signatory countries, while negotiations on similar agreements with Iran, Syria and Ukraine are underway, said Djelic.

He said that Serbia offers many advantages to foreign investors as well as a highly skilled and cheap work force.

Japanese Ambassador to Serbia Toshio Tsunozaki stressed that the two countries have very friendly relations but economic cooperation is not at a high level.

He said that he hopes that the visit by Japanese business-people will serve to strengthen economic relations between Serbia and Japan.

Some 20 representatives of leading Japanese companies are visiting Serbia from November 18 to 20 to examine investment opportunities. The visit has been organised by the Japanese External Trade Organisation.
