Serbian Deputy Prime Minister for EU Integration Bozidar Djelic voiced hope today that visas for Serbian citizens for travelling to countries in the Schengen zone will be abolished on December 16.

Djelic, who is on a working visit to Brussels, said in a statement to Tanjug news agency that he had a meeting with European parliament's rapporteur for visa liberalisation for the West Balkans Tanja Fajon, who confirmed that it is completely certain that Serbian citizens will be able to travel to the EU without visas as of December 19.
The Serbian Deputy Prime Minister will attend a debate on visa liberalisation in the European Parliament later today and a vote on the initiative to propose to the EU ministers of the interior the abolishment of tourist visas for Serbia, Montenegro and Macedonia, which will be held tomorrow. He said that the debate will also be attended by European Commission Vice President Jacques Barrot.
During the meeting with Tanja Fajon, Djelic thanked the European Parliament for the support it might give to Serbia, and to Slovenia in particular for launching the initiative to abolish visas for Serbs even before the planned date of January 1, 2010.
Djelic added that a compromise has been reached between the European Parliament and the European Commission to adopt a joint declaration asking for the abolition of visas for Bosnia-Herzegovina and Albania as well.
This move was supported by Serbia because it wants all citizens of the Western Balkans to be able to travel without visas to Europe.
Djelic invited Tanja Fajon to visit Belgrade on the first day of visa liberalisation for Serbia.
