Vuksanovic told a press conference that the autonomy of the universities will be taken into account when passing the new legislation, adding that university professors, the office of the head of the Belgrade University, and students’ organisations will take part in its drafting.
He also said that the proposals submitted so far have no essential differences.
Head of the Belgrade University Dejan Popovic said the university will give full support to the ministry in its efforts to speed up the passing of the legislation, which he said should usher Serbia into Europe’s single academic space.
He added that if the law is approved by January 2005, its implementation should begin in the 2005/2006 school year.
Popovic also said that some faculties have been thinking of starting to issue diplomas after three years of studies, as stipulated by the Bologna convention.
He explained that students would be able to find jobs with their three-year diplomas, while those who study for five years would be granted a master’s degree.
