Ciplic said that the registration of voters will last four months. The elections for national minority councils will be direct. This will allow the 19 national communities to carry out, together with state and local self-government organs, all tasks related to education, culture, the media and the official use of spoken and written language in the way they believe is best.
The campaign for registration will last until March 11, 2010, when the voter lists will be closed, the Minister explained.
Assistant Minister for Human and Minority Rights Bela Ajzenberger said that the elections for national minority councils will cover the whole of Serbia and effect 800,000 citizens.
According to him, the election campaign will last from March 26 to May 26 next year, while all elections will be held between May 26 and June 26, 2010.
Ajzenberger explained that elections will be conducted in all 170 local governments, using 1,000 polling stations in nine languages.
He stressed that the Ministry, apart from four existing national councils already participating in the elections, received four new applications for national councils from Albanians, Ashkali, Slovenes and Czechs.
