Cvetkovic confirmed that the government will examine at its session today the draft law on transfer of competencies and denied that this law is in disharmony with the Constitution of Serbia.
To what extent is the Statute of Vojvodina in line with the draft law?
The Statute of Vojvodina must be harmonised with the law on transfer of competencies. The purpose of this whole process is to secure better functioning of the authorities. In the past months, an unnecessary turmoil has been created in the public by mentioning terms such as separatism, secession, creation of a state within the state. That has nothing to do with reality. Even laymen understand that the Constitution is a document on which the state’s organisation is based, that the law must be harmonised with the Constitution and that the statute is harmonised with the law.
On objections that this law is unconstitutional:
- I haven’t heard any objections to the constitutionality of the draft law on transfer of competencies. The only institution in this country that can give a valid evaluation of constitutionality is the Constitutional Court. As Prime Minister, my obligation is to take care that everything in this country is done according to the law and the Constitution. That has been the case so far and it will continue to be so.
