Strategy for Integrated Border Management in Serbia presented

The Ministry of the Interior and the European Commission Delegation to Serbia presented today the project on implementation of the Strategy for Integrated Border Management in Serbia, aimed at speeding up cross-border traffic and increasing border security.

First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dacic said that the implementation of the project, whose cost is €1.6 million, will create a unique and harmonised system of border management, with effective coordination between the police, customs, veterinary and phytosanitary inspections.

He pointed out that the free and rapid flow of people and goods will thus be provided, and there will be no duplication of necessary procedures.

Dacic said that the overall level of security in the country will therefore be increased while this will also contribute to the fight against crime and create all the prerequisites for cooperation with other countries of the region.

This is one of the capital projects of the Serbian police, the Minister pointed out, noting that this represents a huge contribution to integrating our country into European structures.

Serbia expects an optimistic outcome concerning the final decision of the EU regarding joining the Schengen white list, he said and announced that the Austrian police will sign an agreement with their counterparts from Serbia, Macedonia and Montenegro.

Head of the European Commission Delegation to Serbia Vincent Degert recalled that the EU has so far invested €27 million to improve the situation on border crossings in Serbia, while another €14 million provided for additional technical equipment.

Today's meeting was also attended by representatives of the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management, as well as project managers from the Serbian and Austrian Ministries of the Interior.
