Forming centre for humanitarian response in emergency situations vital

First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dacic and Russian Minister of Emergency Situations Sergei Shoigu today signed a dynamic plan for organising the initial stage of development of the centre for humanitarian response in emergency situations.

Following the signing Dacic told the press that the Serbian-Russian Centre, to be located in Nis, will serve as the logistics base for response in emergency situations in the entire region, adding that Serbia and Russia are ready to discuss this with other south-eastern European states.
He recalled that the region is often stricken by natural disasters, noting that countries are forced to seek assistance from outside the area, therefore it would be logical that one such centre is formed in the region.
Dacic stressed that Nis has all the infrastructure requirements, as well as an airport, therefore speedy response to emergencies will be ensured, adding that the centre will have the necessary capacity to react in all kinds of situations caused by the natural disasters that often hit the region.
The Deputy Prime Minister said that Russian President Dmitry Medvedev’s visit to Serbia opens new possibilities to fortify the overall cooperation between the two countries and is another confirmation of their satisfactory political and interstate relations.
Shoigu said that the centre will be formed before 2012, noting that it would include a joint demining centre.
He said that next February a conference will be held in Belgrade regarding the formation of the centre for humanitarian response in emergency situations in which, apart from Serbian and Russian representatives, officials from Bulgaria, Greece, Macedonia and Montenegro will also take part.
The Minister said that Russian forces help to put out fires in these countries almost every year, therefore opening this centre will make this faster and more efficient.
He said that signing the dynamic plan is a serious step toward realising the Agreement on cooperation in the fields of humanitarian reaction in emergency situations, natural disasters and technogenic accidents and the removal of their consequences, signed yesterday.
Shoigu said that activities regarding the formation of the centre began a year ago, noting that Russian demining teams are engaged in Serbia and that Russia has so far invested $35 million in the demining process.
