Strategy for science will keep talented young people in Serbia

Serbian Deputy Prime Minister for EU integration and Minister of Science and Technological Development Bozidar Djelic said today that the national strategy for science and technological development will ensure that talented young people stay in the country.

After the presentation of the strategy at the IBM Forum 2009, Djelic stressed that special attention must be given to the development of the information technology sector, specifying that RSD 420 million is allocated for science projects annually from the Ministry’s budget, while by 2011 this sum should be increased by four or five times.

Djelic explained that it is important to make joint investments with major technology companies such as IBM and Microsoft in order to create jobs for highly qualified workers in the area of information technology.

He said that technology should become a sector of key importance to national development.

Speaking about the work of Serbian scientists abroad, Djelic said that the government wishes to identify the problems of Serbian scientists abroad and to find ways to include them in the development of the country.

Djelic said that €20 million will be allocated for projects in which Serbian scientists would take part, adding that the funds will be provided by the European Investment Bank, the European Commission and the World Bank.

This year’s IBM Forum, which is promoting the Smart Planet initiative, is dedicated to the importance of investing in science and the education of new experts. The latest achievements in the application of information technology were presented at the Forum.
