Maximum security measures for Russian President’s visit to Belgrade

Serbian First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dacic said this evening that maximum security measures will be put in place during Russian President Dmitry Medvedev’s upcoming visit to Belgrade.

In an interview with B92 TV, Dacic said that these are standard measures used the world over, adding that no public gatherings will be allowed and that certain streets will be closed to traffic.
Dacic said that talks with the European Commission expert mission, which is visiting Belgrade to ascertain whether Serbia has fulfilled all conditions for visa liberalisation, are going smoothly.
He said that the expert mission will present a report to the European Commission, adding that it is expected that by the middle of November the European Commission will forward its decision to the EU Council of Ministers.
He explained that members of the expert mission, who will be in Belgrade until October 16, will also verify the situation regarding the additional criteria that Serbia has to meet, such as the issuance of travel and personal documents.
The second area they will look into is the implementation of the Law on foreigners, immigration, asylum and readmission, the third is the fight against organised crime and corruption and the fourth is border crime control, said Dacic.
He said that they will also be informed about the agreement signed between the Serbian Interior Ministry and EULEX, adding that it is a police cooperation protocol which concerns the exchange of information for crime control.
He said that this is the final verification of Serbia’s progress, adding that he does not expect any problems.
Dacic said that a lot more has to be done to come closer to European standards, primarily concerning the introduction of video surveillance and better border controls.
He said that the recent violence in Belgrade was not discussed with the expert team, adding that state organs had reacted efficiently to the situation.
