Employment, economic development through innovation

Serbian Deputy Prime Minister for EU integration and Minister of Science and Technological Development Bozidar Djelic said today that the draft strategy for science and technological development in Serbia will be adopted by the end of October. The strategy has been designed to encourage innovative ideas which will lead to the creation of jobs and economic development.

At the opening of an exhibition of scientific innovations at the Radio Television of Serbia (RTS), organised as part of this year’s “Best Technological Innovation Competition”, where 50 works were presented that had reached the third round of the competition, Djelic said that it is necessary to transform knowledge into products and services which can be marketed within the country and abroad.
This is a must for Serbia in the 21st century in order to secure a good living standard. It is only through a knowledge economy that we can become a successful country. It is not viable for Serbia in the long term to be just a country for transit and cheap labour. This is not a position that can be sustained. The only viable solution is to follow a model of economic growth in which knowledge, technology, entrepreneurship and innovation are positioned at the centre, said Djelic.
He said that the Ministry of Science and Technological Development plans to invest major funds in the development of science.
Rector of the University of Belgrade Branko Kovacevic said that the purpose of the best innovation competition is to bring entrepreneurship into science so that it can contribute to economic development.
Serbia should not be known for cheap labour, rather for highly qualified workers. I think that we have great potential when it comes to science, said Kovacevic.
Serbian Chamber of Commerce (PKS) Deputy Chairwoman Vidosava Dzagic expressed her belief that the Ministry of Science and Technological Development will create funds that will support the innovators in their efforts to sell their products on the market.
She noted that 37 innovation based companies were founded over the past five years.
The final of the competition will be broadcast on RTS on December 23 at 8 pm.
This year’s award fund amounts to RSD 12 million.
The exhibition is being supported by the Ministry of Science and Technological Development, PKS and RTS.
