Djelic, Yade lay wreath for Taton

Serbian Deputy Prime Minister for EU integration Bozidar Djelic and French Secretary of State for Sport Rama Yade today laid a wreath and lit candles at the memorial to the murdered French national Brice Taton. They said that they hope that this crime will not affect the strong friendly ties between the Serbian and French people.

Speaking to the press, Djelic said that the wreath was laid on behalf of the two countries and that this joint gesture shows that France and Serbia are determined not to let this crime go unpunished.
This also shows that Serbia is firmly resolved to bring to justice those responsible for this crime and to make sure that they get the maximum sentences, said Djelic.
He said that there is no place in Serbia for those who wish to harm others just because they are different.
Over the coming weeks and months, Serbia will show that it is a country committed to upholding its Constitution, where extremist groups will be banned and that the nation is behind the state’s effort to build a society based on European values, where diversity is respected, said Djelic.
He said that it is important that the French see this determination and it is vital for the Serbian people to build a tolerant society.
Rama Yade said that she knows that hundreds of Serbian people came to show their respect to Taton and that the Serbs are a hospitable nation, adding that strong ties exist between Serbia and France.
This crime was monstrous but it will not affect the relations between the two countries. The French people have reacted to Taton’s death with deep regret and sorrow but we know that the Serbian authorities are determined to arrest all the perpetrators and to ensure that the sentences they receive serve as a deterrent to hooliganism, said Yade.
She stressed that she does not wish to view Serbia through the prism of this incident, adding that France is relieved to see the Serbian government’s determined efforts to deal with violence.
Yade thanked the Serbian people for their show of support for Brice Taton’s family.
