Key aspects of National Strategy for Scientific, Technological Development outlined

Deputy Prime Minister for EU integration and Minister of Science and Technological Development Bozidar Djelic today stated that the two key aspects of the National Strategy for Scientific and Technological Development before 2014 will be to prioritise their goals and form overseas partnerships.
At a public debate on the draft National Strategy Djelic said that Serbia must determine a precise list of priorities, as the most developed countries have done, and form partnerships in order to go beyond its borders.
He stressed that the strategy proposes seven national priorities in science and technology, namely biomedicine, new materials and nanoscience, environmental protection and climate change, energy and energy efficiency, agriculture and food, information and communications technologies and promotion of national identity.
The goals we will strive to achieve through forming partnerships are to develop and retain talented scientists, define qualitatively and quantitatively the number of students at faculties for a mid-term period, improve cooperation within the system and establish partnerships with international organisations and the global scientific community, he said.
Djelic stressed that according to the strategy, the financing level of 1% of GDP for scientific development should be achieved before 2014, announcing that over €300 million will be invested in scientific infrastructure, which is a key precondition for achieving the goals of the strategy.
He said that the academic community in Nis needs to launch their own projects and noted that all good ideas will be supported by the Ministry of Science and Technological Development.
By adopting this strategy the Serbian government wants to keep experts in the country and to help them participate in international projects, he said.
For Serbia to be successful, scientific and business partners in the world need to be found, Djelic said and explained that this was the key to new development in Ireland, Portugal and South Korea.
Commenting on the tragic death of French national Brice Taton, Djelic said he expects violence to be condemned throughout the whole country.
Serbia will punish the perpetrators of the assault against Taton, Djelic said, noting that this will not affect the visa liberalisation process, but will be included in the European Commission’s report on Serbia’s progress towards EU integration.
