Serbia meets all Schengen criteria

First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dacic said today that Serbia has fulfilled all conditions for abolishing Schengen visas for its citizens.
Dacic announced that the Serbian Interior Ministry has sent the EU a report stating that Serbia has fulfilled all conditions for abolishing Schengen visas for its citizens.
Dacic said he will meet with Vice-President of the European Commission Responsible for Justice, Security and Freedom Jacques Barrot on September 28.
Barrot will take part in a regional conference of the ministers of interior and justice, “Strengthening Regional and Transnational Cooperation for a Successful Judiciary”, which takes place on September 28-29 in Belgrade.
Dacic said that Serbian citizens will be able to travel visa free as of January 1, 2010, describing this as the first benefit our citizens will have from EU integration.
Dacic said that state’s strategic interests include defending national interests, EU integration, economic development, social justice in the conditions of economic crisis and fighting crime and corruption.
He said the Interior Ministry will continue fighting against crime, stressing that there will be no protection.
Dacic recalled that more than 1 million biometric passports have already been issued, adding that as soon as Serbia reaches agreement with EULEX, the conditions for issuing new biometric passports to Kosovo citizens will be defined.
The Minister stressed that the rules for the issuance of new passports do not apply to IDPs or those who have not been living in Kosovo for years.
Minister Dacic also visited the Valjevo Police Department and met with municipal, police and judicial representatives of all the municipalities of the Kolubara District.
Dacic also visited the Eparchy of the Serbian Orthodox Church, where he met with bishop Milutin, as well as the construction site of the Church of God's Resurrection, which is the second largest church in the Balkans after the St Sava's Temple.
