Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica told Italian daily Corriere della Sera that he expects "Italia a Belgrado 2004," a business event gathering over 350 Italian businessmen, to help improve the political, economic and cultural ties between Serbia and Italy. The Serbian government's web site brings excerpts from the interview.
Vojislav Kostunica
Does the event reflect Serbia's political stability?
It is a great pleasure for me to see that a large number of businessmen have responded to the project that will help strengthen relations between Serbia and Italy. Serbia has improved its economic conditions and investment climate by securing quick and efficient procedures for investors, as a guarantee in the case of a firm's bankruptcy. One more issue has already been discussed and that is the construction of Belgrade-Podgorica highway.
Upcoming election in Kosovo-Metohija:
Following the March violence, the Serbian government prepared the Plan for political solution to the situation in Kosovo-Metohija. We proposed that Serb and ethnic Albanian administrative areas be separated, by means of some kind of decentralisation or cantonisation. We want Serbs to get institutional autonomy on the territory of entire Kosovo, some kind of protection, since all other measures have failed to produce results. After it was adopted by the Serbian parliament, the Plan was accepted by the international community. However, some problems have arisen and discussion on the issue is still open. I don't think that the election will change the situation in Kosovo.
US and international community's pressure on the Serbian government to hand over Ratko Mladic to the Hague tribunal:
We have carried out serious investigations in recent months and have no proof whatsoever that Mladic is in Serbia. From time to time we receive information on his whereabouts, but all of them have proved to be wrong. The investigation continues.
Future of the state union of Serbia-Montenegro:
It seems that Montenegro does not want direct elections for the Serbia-Montenegrin parliament, but according to the Belgrade Agreement and the Constitutional Charter of the state union, the holding of elections for the Serbia-Montenegrin parliament in 2005 is mandatory, and the referendum can be held in 2006. I am willing to respect agreements.
