Dacic presents millionth biometric passport

First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dacic today presented the millionth biometric passport to Marija Dimitrijevic, a student from Leskovac.

Having presented the passport at the Leskovac police administration, Dacic announced that a new way of taking fingerprints for the new passports will be introduced in a month, adding that this has yet to become practice in the EU. He explained that Kosovo-Metohija citizens currently residing in central Serbia will be issued passports in their towns of residence, while those whose place of permanent residence is still in the province will be issued passports in Belgrade. The Deputy Prime Minister commended the Ministry employees working in the passport department, thanking citizens for their patience regarding the passport issuance procedure. Dacic recalled that in 14 months a total of one million new passports have been issued, stressing that the old ones are no longer being issued, though their validity may still be prolonged. As for abolishing visas for Serbian citizens from January 1, he said that the European Commission has included Serbia on the Schengen ‘white list’, adding that the Ministry of the Interior is striving to fulfil all the conditions required. He said the protocol Serbia signed with EULEX on Kosovo-Metohija is solely a technical police protocol implying an exchange of information with the aim of fighting organised crime.

We were given consent to cooperate with EULEX and this cooperation will yield results on both sides of the administrative border line, Dacic said, adding that the protocol is based on UN Security Council Resolution 1244.
