Speaking at a press conference concerning the Regional Centres for the Professional Development of Teachers project, Obradovic stressed that the regional centres will help resolve problems in the education sector more efficiently.
The Minister said that local communities will now get the opportunity to address their specific educational needs through these regional centres.
State Secretary at the Education Ministry Tinde Kovac-Cerovic said that the professional development of teachers will be among the Ministry’s priorities but the local-self governments will also play a very important role.
Kovac-Cerovic said that the four new regional centres will begin working within the next three to six months, adding that similar centres are already functioning in Uzice, Cacak and Nis.
She explained that teachers will get professional training at these centres; primarily through seminars and that the centres will employ local people.
She said that the project is designed to support the decentralisation of the system of professional development for education employees.
Swiss Ambassador Erwin Hofer said that the Swiss government will finance two thirds of the cost of the renovation of the buildings that will house the centres, adding that a maximum of €100,000 will be spent on each centre.
He said that the Swiss government has invested €13 million in Serbia’s educational system since 2002, stressing that the education sector will continue to be a focal point of cooperation between the two countries.
