Southeast European police forces make progress

First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dacic today said that considerable progress has been made in cooperation among police forces in South-eastern Europe, stressing that without it there can be no successful fight against crime.

During a break at the 9th Regional Ministerial Conference on Illegal Migration, Organised Crime, Corruption and Terrorism, taking place in Brdo Pri Kranju, Slovenia, Dacic told the press that the Serbian police are one of the leaders in regional cooperation, adding that his Ministry wishes to cooperate well with everyone.
He announced that an international conference of interior and justice ministers from the region and representatives of the European Commission will be held in Belgrade later this month.
The Minister explained that the aim is to achieve full cooperation and exchange of information so as to prevent all forms of criminal activity, noting that criminals from all countries in the region are connected and make deals easily.
The Minister said that although visa liberalisation will bring many risks, Serbia is ready to meet new challenges.
Many countries believe that visa liberalisation for Western Balkan countries will encourage illegal migration and organised crime, Dacic noted.
Today's meeting concluded that Western Balkan countries have made progress concerning the abolition of visa restrictions.
Serbia will do all it can to fulfill all the remaining preconditions and secure its inclusion in the Schengen 'white list' in the upcoming period.
Serbia is making good progress towards the goal of visa liberalisation from January 1, 2010, said Dacic, adding that by the end of this week the number of biometric passports so far issued will reach one million.
He said that Serbia has completed the strategy for managing migration, adding that one of the proposals put forward at the conference suggested the inclusion of Kosovo in the process of regional police cooperation.
Dacic said that he objected to the proposal by pointing out that the situation in Kosovo is a political issue, not a police matter.
He said that Serbia will take part in only those forums where Kosovo is represented according to Security Council Resolution 1244, not as an independent country.
He said that no decision was made at the conference regarding the inclusion of Kosovo and no debate was held on the question.
The stance taken on the matter was correct, remarked Dacic, adding that this should not jeopardize the good police cooperation which has been established in the region.
The Minister said that an international declaration on cooperation in the fight against terrorism will be signed during the next few weeks.
Interior ministers and ministerial delegations from Slovenia, Austria, Albania, Bulgaria, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Montenegro, Greece, Croatia, Italy, Hungary, Macedonia, Romania, Serbia and Turkey are participating in the week long conference.
The participants will sign a memorandum on cooperation and exchange information valuable in the fight against organised crime and corruption.
